A 2 1/2 day workshop will be held May 4-6, 2015 to gather community input for the National Science Foundation on the most important scientific questions, research opportunities, and broader impacts that the community will be pursuing in 2018 and beyond, and the seismic and geodetic facility capabilities that will be required to support this research and associated education, outreach, training and workforce development. Two types of capabilities will be identified:
Foundational facilities are those seismic and geodetic capabilities without which geoscience research, as practiced today, could not continue
Frontier facilities are new capabilities, beyond those that might presently exist, which will be required to make rapid progress in addressing one or more science grand challenge questions

Workshop attendance will be limited to 120 people, chosen by the Workshop Organizing Committee, including ~20 participants from various Federal agencies (NSF, USGS, NOAA, DOE). Applications to attend the Workshop close February 15, 2015.
Because attendance at the workshop will be limited, 1-2 page “whitepapers” are being solicited describing important scientific questions or problems that individuals will be working on in the next decade and the seismic and/or geodetic facilities capabilities needed to support that science. These whitepapers will be available to breakout groups at the workshop and incorporated into the final workshop report. Everyone is encouraged to submit whitepapers, regardless of whether you plan to apply to attend the workshop.Whitepaper submissions will close April 15, 2015.
Finally, there will be four two-hour webinars before the workshop to review existing science priorities and future facility needs. Webinar topics will include: (1) Grand Challenges in Seismology and Geodesy, (2) New Research Opportunities in the Earth Sciences (NROES), and EarthScope & GeoPRISMS Science Plans, (3) 2014 UNAVCO Workshop Report, and (4) 2014 IRIS Workshop Report.
